Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is aimed at increasing websites’ visibility in search engine results pages, as a form of web marketing.

Several SEM methods exist:

–   Search Engine Optimisation: it is the process of improving a website’s visibility in “organic” search engines page results. The “organic” results are the natural and unpaid ones, which only depend on the web page’s relevancy. There a lot of techniques that can help improving your ranking in the results.

–    Paid placements and inclusions: the most important Search Engines, such as Google, Yahoo! or Bing, allow websites to buy positions in their search results pages, as a form of advertising. Although many search engines, like Yahoo!, mix paid with organic results (inclusion) others, like Google, show and label separately organic and paid results.

Paid placements on search engines are generally PPC (Pay Per Click) ads: advertisers pay only when their ad is clicked. Among PPC providers, Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing, and Microsoft adCenter are the largest operators, and work on a bid-based model (advertisers bid on keywords relevant to their target market).
