Tips for Deciding on a Domain Name for Your Site

Registering for a domain name for your website is a relatively simple process. Once you have come up with a name for your site, you only have to check it against the current directory and then register the name if it is not already in use.

Although the actual registration process is easy, coming up with a domain name can be a bit tricky. If you have a name for your business and the site you are developing is a business website, coming up with a domain name may not be quite so hard. After all, your first choice will likely be your business name. If your business name is particularly long, however, you should consider coming up with some sort of abbreviation.

When coming up with a potential domain name for your site, it is important to think of a name that is fairly short and simple. A long domain name will be easily forgotten and is difficult to include on brochures, catalogues, business cards, and other marketing and business materials. Remember, you will be telling people this domain name as well as including it on most of your paperwork. Therefore, it needs to be easy to say, easy to read, and easy to understand.

The domain name that you select also needs to be catchy and easy to remember. The easier the name is to remember, the more likely someone will be to recall your domain name at a later date. In addition, since you may be telling people your domain name over the phone, in radio and television ads, and when talking to them while networking, it needs to be easy to spell. Don’t use unusual spellings or words that are generally difficult to spell. You want your domain name to be as easy as possible to write so there will be nothing preventing your customers from accessing your site.
